Out walking today I remembered a magic moment with a teacher. Bill Lose; flight instructor and educator in life's wisdom. One of the magic things that he taught was that you let the plane fly until it isn't flying any more. I tried to emulate those perfect landings so hard. Pushing to get the plane to land just as he did.
Then, one day, out solo, I blew landing after landing. Not just blew them, couldn't seem to get down. I mean, a runway that was always so long just wasn't long enough to get that plane down. I bet I did four or five go arounds. Then, Bill's voice on the radio... Hey, could you do us a favor? Sure I answered.... Could you go out to the practice area and give a wind report.... Sure I said. Relieved that I didn't have to work at landing for a bit.
The flight out to the practice area. I flew over our house. Looked at how the wind was coming out of the canyon. Watched for other aircraft. I think I was the only person flying in the valley that day. Then back to the field. This time my approach was easy. The plane seemed to know where it was going. It flew until it landed. I did one more of those and realized that the lesson I had just learned was about blinders.
Focused on landing. Get-down-itis... As soon as the thrall to land was broken, the training to let the plane fly until it landed kicked in. A life lesson. Being home. T
It is father's day 2013. Here is to my dad. Pop. To my father in law. John. And, to all the men who have and are in the pantheon of wisdom. The painted man, the warrior who guides when the path gets confused. And, to the celebration of Creation that is father's day.
